Gathering in the Rain: Communicating Rainwater Harvesting in Tanzania and Beyond. The Radio Programmes.

BBC World Service

'Water is a strange natural resource.  It can unite a community as easily as it can divide it.  Rainwater harvesting for crop production, livestock and everyday needs is a promising and appropriate way of upgrading rainfed agriculture in the semi-arid tropics.  But making better use of rainwater is not just about technology; central to it is effective interaction with many different people and factors influencing sucess.  In this context, the four programmes in the 'Language in Focus' series explore the language and communication of concepts and ideas."

The four programmes present work in Tanzania by the Soil-Water Management Research Group led by the Sokoine University of Agriculture.  The group has been working with villagers in semi-arid lands and achieving success in communicating the idea and methods of rainwater harvesting.  The series starts with a 'scene setter' describing life in a semi-arid areas. The second programme discusses what rainwater harvesting is and how it works.  Following this, the third identifies the factors which led to achieving success in rainwater management within communities.  The final programme addresses the need to spread the message within semi-arid communities and to the wider world community.
